I trust that I’m not the only one who feels as if forces much larger than us and way beyond our control are pulling our country further into darkness, and, I would say, further into sin. I don’t believe that the U.S. has ever been a “Christian country” – a nation born and expanded by genocide and ethnic cleansing, dependent on slave labor for its prosperity, could never be “Christian” – but it sure feels as if whatever goodness our society still possesses is slipping away.
To my Muslim friends, I am so, so sorry. I see that 81 percent of white evangelicals, both from the working and professional classes, from the old Rust Belt to the deepest parts of the old Confederacy, voted for Donald Trump. I see that 15 percent (according to a pre-election survey) of non-white evangelicals were likely to do the same, helping to make him the most powerful person on the planet. He demonized you, turned people’s fears against you, and incited radical Christian terrorists to harass, beat, and even kill your friends and family members.

And many people from my faith community, the evangelical community, barely mumbled a word of protest, much less acknowledged that they even noticed what was happening.
It’s one of the most underreported stories in the world: Muslims shielding Christians from terrorists. From Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, and other countries, accounts have trickled out, telling how Muslims have risked their lives to protect their Christian friends and neighbors.
