The Thing at a Girls’ Soccer Match that Made Me Furious

Once a student of Mr. Hung’s, always a student of Mr. Hung’s, I tell my students. No matter how many years into the future, and no matter the reason, I want my students to know that they can always reach out to me – whether that’s just to say hi, to ask for advice about college majors, to review mathy stuff we talked about once upon a time, or to request a letter of recommendation, et cetera. College and young adulthood can be exciting times, but also discouraging ones, too, so it’s part of my commitment to my former students that if they ever want to talk about anything, even if it’s years or decades into the future, I’ll be here for them.

Stop Sexual Assault in Schools Now Has Resources in Chinese!

My friends Esther Warkov and Joel Levin and their team at the nonprofit Stop Sexual Assault in Schools (SSAIS) have worked for many years to provide resources and advocacy on matters of sexual harassment, assault, and rape in K-12 schools. Now they’re pleased to provide several of their resources translated into Chinese!

Xinyi He (何心怡), a Rutgers University grad student and an Indiana University alumna, has been working as an intern for SSAIS, and she has done the marvelous work of rendering several of SSAIS’ publications into Simplified Chinese. Working While Female Can Be Hazardous to Your Health

Miss the first three posts in this 16 Days series? Start right here.

A friend of mine once told me how a stranger sexually harassed her at work. She was a pharmacist at a drug store like CVS or Walgreens; the perpetrator was a customer, who even lurked outside the store until she was done with her shift. When she came outside, he accosted her and made her feel truly threatened. It was definitely a traumatizing experience.

Maybe this kind of thing has happened to you as well; if not, it’s likely happened to someone you know. Sexual harassment occurs in every conceivable type of workplace, and in the restaurant/hospitality and retail sectors more than any other. Sometimes, the perpetrator is a boss or colleague. Other times, it’s a customer.

That’s the scenario Shin-hye faces during season one of It’s OK to Be Sensitive! Watch this nine-and-a-half minute webisode:
